Bridal preparations: black and white documentary wedding photography

Let’s face it, wedding photographers are in most cases, expected to focus on the brides and bridesmaids getting ready more than on grooms getting ready although -obviously- when it comes to same-sex marriages that’s an all different story!

Be it, brides or grooms, the “getting ready” phase is an ideal time to take a reportage / photojournalistic/documentary approach to wedding photography.

Hannah was getting ready, helped by her sister and mother, a few miles away from Alnwick in the North East. It was a cold February morning and a lovely light was flowing through the windows. Hannah asked me to create as many black and white photographs of her day as possible;of course, documentary photography can be either in colour or black and white, it’s just that Hannah is particularly fond of black and white photography, especially when it comes to weddings. Not all photos work in black and white, likewise, not all photos work in colour and some work well in either. I found like Hannah that black and white was perfectly suited to the light and settings that morning.

For years I processed my own black and white films and prints; black and white photography remains a passion:I favour a traditional rendering,rich in tones.
